The multi story car park project realizes stage two of the Mater Private Hospital Townsville Masterplan created by Peddle Thorp. The car park provides Mater Townsville with a paid parking structure providing parking for the whole campus, anticipating the growth expected in the future stages of the masterplan. The design of the car park was devised to compliment the existing Mercy Centre, taking inspiration from the façade cladding spacing and stepped massing. The façade also provides an urban gesture to the neighborhood providing an outwardly focused façade for the Mater to the surrounding area, creating a billboard promoting their location and services.
The design team rationalized the façade such that the structural support for the vehicle barriers also supported the façade, roof, and downpipes creating a cohesive and efficient system that maximizes space and minimizes waste.
The concrete corner provides a canvas for art opportunities and signals the entrance to the Hospital Campus. The height of which can be seen along major feeder roads around the campus, making it a prominent landmark for the Hospital.
Inside the car park, each deck is designed flat, with ramped driveways in between to make navigating the car park easier for vehicles. This ensures that the car park is accessible and user-friendly for everyone, from patients and visitors to hospital staff.
Finally, the car park also incorporates a number of sustainable features, including solar panels on the roof that provide some solar power to the hospital campus. This makes the car environmentally responsible, reflecting Mater’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
